The Journey To Recovery

Leaving is only the beginning. The journey after abuse is rarely a straight line — it is about finding yourself again, healing what you can, and learning that the life waiting for you can be anything you want it to be.

There is a strange thing about the aftermath of domestic abuse. People often talk about leaving as though that is where the story ends.

You get out. You close the door. You walk away. You are safe.

And perhaps, for a while, that is enough. But then comes the after. The part nobody always prepares you for.

Because leaving an abusive relationship doesn't necessarily mean that everything suddenly feels better. Sometimes, it is when you finally have the space to feel everything you couldn't feel while you were surviving.

The anger. The grief. The confusion. The guilt. The fear. The things you tolerated that you now cannot understand. The pieces of yourself that became so small that you almost forgot they were there.

Healing is not a straight line. There isn't a magical morning when you wake up and suddenly everything that happened no longer hurts. There may be days when you feel strong and days when something unexpectedly takes you right back to a place you thought you'd left behind.

And that doesn't mean you're going backwards.

It means you're healing.

For me, the journey after has been about learning who I am when I am no longer defined by what happened to me.

It has been about finding my voice. Learning to trust myself. Learning that my feelings matter. Learning that boundaries aren't cruelty. Learning that saying no doesn't make me difficult. Learning that I don't have to explain my worth to anyone.

And perhaps most importantly, learning that I don't have to become the person I was before abuse.

I can become someone new. Someone who knows herself a little better. Someone who recognises the red flags she once couldn't see. Someone who understands that love should not require her to disappear. Someone who can finally begin to choose herself.

There is still healing to do. There probably always will be. But healing doesn't mean that we remain broken.

It means we begin to put the pieces back together — perhaps differently, perhaps more carefully, perhaps with a much stronger understanding of who we are.

And somewhere along that journey, something beautiful can happen.

You begin to live rather than simply survive.

You laugh again. You make plans. You discover things you enjoy. You find people who feel safe. You start making decisions because you want to, rather than because you are trying to keep someone else happy. You begin to recognise yourself in the mirror.

And one day, perhaps quietly, you realise:

I am still here.

This blog is part of the pieces of that journey.

They are not instructions for healing, and they are not here to tell you that everything will suddenly be okay.

They are simply words from someone who has walked some of this road herself.

I hope somewhere within them you recognise a feeling, a moment, a version of yourself.

Perhaps one poem says something you have never been able to put into words.

Perhaps another part of this blog or website reminds you of something you thought you had forgotten.

And perhaps one gives you a little hope.

Because there is life after the lies.

There is life after survival.

There is a version of you waiting to be discovered beneath everything you were told you were.

You are not what happened to you.

You are not the things they called you.

You are not the mistakes you made while trying to survive.

You are still YOU.

And your journey after can be the beginning of finding your way back home to yourself.

I hope this website and it's contents resonate with you. And more than anything, I hope they remind you that your story doesn't end where theirs did.

Sometimes, that's where yours finally begins.
